A BBC report highlights that over 160 million women in India are employed as domestic workers or serve as homemakers, often undertaking labor-intensive tasks in roles that are undervalued and often overlooked. The narrative of Anupama resonates deeply with these women, who sacrifice their aspirations to fulfill familial responsibilities, finding solace and reflection in the struggles portrayed on screen.

In contrast to other Indian soap operas known for their clichéd tropes and exaggerated portrayal of middle-class households, “Anupama” offers a refreshing perspective that has been missing from Indian television for the past decade.

Typically, I wouldn’t consider watching this show. As someone with discerning tastes in television, I’m more inclined towards content like Money Heist and Squid Game, especially with the popularity of OTT platforms. Indian soap operas wouldn’t have crossed my mind.

ANUPAMA DOESN’T STAND DOWN:

Following the revelation of Vanraj’s affair, the expected soap opera drama unfolds. Yet, diverging from the norm where the female lead is portrayed as a distraught figure, Anupama takes a bold stance against her husband’s betrayal. Refusing to succumb to despair, she asserts her independence and, despite familial opposition, takes the courageous step of filing for divorce.

She overcomes many obstacles including claims of ‘Mental Retardation’ from her separated husband and taunts of destruction from her Mother-in-Law but she doesn’t step down.

FEMINISM DONE RIGHT

This show truly excels in portraying feminism, and I cannot emphasize this enough. The manner in which it portrays its female lead characters is unprecedented in Indian television. Not only does it champion genuine gender equality, but it does so in ways that defy societal norms and expectations.

By positioning Anupama, a woman in her forties who has solely been a homemaker, as the champion of feminism, the show shatters numerous stereotypes. It features women as owners of major businesses, vice presidents of companies, and directors of schools. The show’s progressive portrayal of women of all ages, unlike many other Indian soap operas, is what sets it apart and makes it exceptional.

TACKLING REAL LIFE LADIES ISSUES:

This show sheds new light on crucial issues such as ovarian cancer, infertility, molestation, eve-teasing, sexual assault, job disparity, workplace harassment, divorce, patriarchal influence, and many others.

Not only does this show tackle these issues it also allows for people to safely engage in discussions related to topics about which people would probably not understand. One such issue is Mental Health.

When Anupama notices her daughter Pakhi exhibiting signs of depression and anxiety, she takes the proactive step of seeking help from a psychiatrist. This decision challenges the stigma that still surrounds mental health issues in many modern families. It emphasizes the importance of openly discussing sensitive topics without fear of judgment or stigma.

IMPORTANCE OF MALE CHARACTERS IN SUPPORTING ROLES

In the latest storyline of Anupama, she is presented with a business partnership opportunity by Anuj Kapadia, a wealthy individual who also happens to be her childhood classmate. Unbeknownst to her, Anuj has harbored feelings for her over the past 26 years.

Despite being in his power, Anuj decides not to tell Anupama about his feelings, why? I found the reason quite wholesome as well: it is because he thought that Anupama did not need a man in her life.

“Anuj realizes that everyone requires support, but for women, this support can manifest in various forms. It can stem from friends, family, and relatives, highlighting that a woman’s support system isn’t solely dependent on a husband. He emphasizes that a woman can be independent and self-reliant, standing firmly on her own two feet.

PROPERLY FLESHED OUT CHARACTERS

It’s a rarity to witness character development throughout a series, particularly in Indian television. In most soap operas, characters are expected to remain static, defined by a singular personality trait that eventually becomes their defining feature. However, this show breaks away from that trend.

Leela, who is the infamous Mother-in-Law of this show is a multi-faceted character who isn’t what she is cut out to be. While she is written like your typical Indian Saas, she also takes up numerous other roles.

She supports Anupama when she decides to open her own business and also helps her overcome the grief of being cheated on. However, she doesn’t shy away from her principles. She supports her daughter-in-law while still being a strict well know mother-in-law. Leela also stands along with Anupama when she is insulted by her own Sister-in-Law Rakhi, which is rare in many Indian shows.

ANUPAMA LOOKS, FEELS, AND BEHAVES RELATABLY

Unlike other shows where the lead embodies a glamorous and conventional definition of beauty, Anupama defies gender and beauty stereotypes by portraying its protagonist as an older woman who doesn’t conform to industry standards of beauty.

She displays vulnerability by shedding tears when she’s weak, yet exhibits strength when necessary. Anupama adeptly balances supporting her family while also seeking their assistance when needed.
